My
family arrived in
Australia
on the exact day that Armstrong walked on the moon.
Five
or so years later I joined T.A.F.E. in Yeppoon and fell in love
with the sheer diversity of what can be done with clay. Beach
Potters in Yeppoon, and the Capricornia Potter’s Group in the
Walter Reid Cultural Centre, Rockhampton, have both been learning
and teaching centres for me.
To
the present time, I still feel that there is more to explore, and
am unable to stop experimenting. Every single firing has its share
of glaze tests. The movement of multiple glazes to catch the flash
of sunlight and darker depth of the sea surface is an ongoing
challenge.
Pottery
is an absorbing craft for me, in that shape and colour and texture
in my work is always derived from my surroundings, sometimes on my
hands and knees, and sometimes at a distance. Weathered stone and
lichen…..how….?
Stoneware
has always been my preferred medium as I love its strength and
permanence. Raku is exciting with its white crackle and blackness,
or gorgeous iridescence, and, of course, pitfiring has its subtle
colours and gentle shadows.
Many
famous tutor potters
have contributed to my skills and knowledge, and as mentors also,
they have shared their love of clay and their love of life, too.
As
with art and any craft, the work should speak for itself and I
hope you enjoy what mine is saying.
